What to expect
The Treo 650 Updater 1.13 will change the permanent (ROM) software in your smartphone. Please set aside 20 to 30 minutes to complete the process.
Here's what happens during the upgrade:
- You perform a regular HotSync operation to ensure you have a current backup of the smartphone data you normally save to your desktop computer
- The updater is transferred to your smartphone and runs automatically
- All data and applications are erased while the device's ROM is upgraded
- A second HotSync operation restores the data that was backed up earlier
System Requirements
- Sprint PCS Treo 650 smartphone.
- Windows 2000/XP
- No expansion card inserted in phone during update. If you don't remove it, the installer will ask you to do so before proceeding.
- Smartphone connected to AC adapter and the HotSync cable throughout the update:

How To Install
Making sure your data is backed up
This updater erases all personal data on your smartphone. Make certain it will be restored after the update.
- Wireless email and calendar
Wireless-only applications, such as Exchange ActiveSync, require a manual sync before updating your device.
-
Photos and videos
The Treo 650 CD includes a Media conduit that backs up your photos and videos. The web download of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager does not include the Media conduit. How can you tell if you have this conduit?
- Launch Palm Desktop on your desktop computer (even if you sync with Outlook).
- From the User: menu at the top right, select your Treo 650's user name.
- On the left side of the screen, you should see an icon for Media. Click it.
- Make sure that the photos and videos on your smartphone are displayed in Palm Desktop.
If your photos and videos are not being backed up when you sync, you'll need to copy them to an SD expansion card before updating. Remember: any items that were not backed up will be lost.
- Third-party backup utilities
Some third-party applications change the way your smartphone backs up data. Other third-party applications do not back up data. If you have third-party software on your device, please contact the developer to learn what components are backed up during a HotSync operation, and if HotSync conduits are altered. Any data not backed up will be lost.
- Exit or disable any third-party programs that control installations
If you use add-on software that watches new software installations and controls them, such as Uninstall Manager, disable it before updating.
- Exit third-party launcher applications
Before updating, exit any launcher applications on your smartphone, such as SilverScreen, ZLauncher or Launcher X. The Treo 650 Updater was designed to work with the built-in Palm OS launcher only.
- Do not back up and restore through an SD/MMC expansion card
Some customers use an expansion card to make backups of the smartphone's entire contents, but for this update, please perform the HotSync operations as instructed. Otherwise, you may see looping resets.

Create A New, Blank User Profile
- Perform a HotSync operation to back up your data. Make sure your conduits are set to "Synchronize the files" (how).
- Next, you'll be performing a hard reset. Remember:
- A hard reset will erase everything on your smartphone, so make sure your data is backed up before you do this.
- Also, you may need to re-enter third-party software registration codes when you restore your data later, so keep these handy or request them from the third-party software vendor before proceeding.
To perform a hard reset:
- Press the Battery Door Release button and slide the battery door downward to remove it from your Treo. Do not remove the battery.
- Take out the stylus and have it ready.
- Hold down the Power/End
button.
- While still holding the Power/End button, use the stylus to gently press the RESET hole on the back.
- You will see palmOne logo and a progress bar first, then a circular Palm Powered logo. Do not release the Power/End button until the second, circular Palm Powered logo appears.
 |
 |
| Keep holding the Power/End button during this screen. |
When you see this screen, release the Power/End button. |
- Your smartphone will ask you to tap three targets, set date and time, and confirm setup. Do this now.
- Perform a HotSync operation with your desktop computer. You will be asked to select a user or create a new account. Select New and enter a completely new user name (such as "TempDelete"). Let the HotSync operation complete. Your smartphone will contain none of your user data at this point.
Prepare Your Treo 650
- Do not turn on the phone features or connect to the Sprint PCS network at this point. Important: If the phone is on, press and hold Power/End
to disconnect from the network. Then perform a soft reset.
- During the installation process, make sure your Treo 650's battery is fully charged and that your smartphone is connected to both a power supply and your PC.
Download and Install
- Double-click the file you unzipped: Treo650_1_13a_SPNT.exe
- Follow all instructions in the installation wizard that will appear. Important: During installation, you'll be asked to select a user. Choose the new user name ("TempDelete") that you created. Then continue following the steps in the wizard, which will include a HotSync operation that transfers the updater to your smartphone. The update will start after you sync. Do not remove your power cable during the update.
- When the update is done, the installation wizard will ask you to sync again to restore your data. When asked for your user name, select the old user name you were using before you changed it. Your backed up personal data and applications will be restored.
After the update
- If the update was successful, your smartphone's Software version number will be Treo650-1.13a-SPNT (how to check).
- Now that you've updated your smartphone, some of the features and functions are different. Stay up-to-date with the latest documentation: Sprint PCS Treo 650 User Guide (3.5MB PDF).
- If you have paired Bluetooth wireless devices, you will need to re-pair those devices after installing the updater. The secure pairing files are not backed up or restored with synchronization. See your user guide for details.
Was the update successful?
Restore data and settings
When you sync after the update is complete, the smartphone data that was backed up will be restored. Here's how to restore a few items that are not backed up via HotSync:
- Bluetooth pairing
If you paired Bluetooth wireless devices, you will need to re-pair those devices now. The secure pairing files are not backed up or restored with synchronization. See your user guide for more about Bluetooth settings on your device.
- Wireless email and calendar
Programs that sync wirelessly only, such as Exchange ActiveSync, may appear to be missing data until a wireless sync occurs. Perform a manual wireless sync to restore emails, calendar appointments, and other items.
