Photos & Videos
Use Photos & Videos for the first time
- Open Photos & Videos

Do one of the following:
- To set up an online account to sync: To set up an account that is listed, tap the account type, and go to step 3. To set up an account type that is not listed, tap Find more to find an app and follow the instructions onscreen.
- To use Photos & Videos without creating an online account: Tap Done.
- Enter the account information, and then tap Sign in.
Depending on the account, you may be presented with options for which apps should download data from that account. For each app, tap On or Off, and then tap Create Account.
- Tap Go.
Work with panels in Photos & Videos
When the Photos & Videos app opens, there are two panels visible on the screen. For information about hiding and resizing these panels, see Working with applications .
Look at pictures
To get pictures on your device, you can do any of the following:

Note You can download and look at GIFs in Email, and they are saved to USB storage, but you can't look at GIFs in Photos & Videos or use one as wallpaper.
You can also look at pictures on the web directly in the web browser (see Viewing web content ).
- Open Photos & Videos

- Tap the album containing the picture, and tap the thumbnail of the picture.
- Swipe left or right on the screen to look at other pictures in the album.
- To return to the album, tap [album name]. Tap the screen if the album name button is not visible.
Watch a video
Before you begin Before you put videos on your device, make sure you have enough storage space on your device to fit the file. Open Device Info and look at the Available field under Device.
To get videos on your device, you can do any of the following:
You can view DRM-free videos that you receive as email attachments or that you copy from your computer in the MPEG-4, H.263, and H.264 formats. Videos play on your device in landscape orientation.
Key term DRM-free: A file that is not protected by Digital Rights Management. DRM-free video files can be copied as many times as you like and can be played on your device.
- Open Photos & Videos

- Tap an album.
- Tap the thumbnail of the video you want to watch. Video thumbnails are identified with a
icon.
Use YouTube to view YouTube videos (see Playing media ).
Use video playback controls
- Tap the video to manually display or dismiss the playback controls.

Organize your pictures and videos into albums
The Photos & Videos app organizes the pictures and videos you add to your device into predefined libraries and albums. There are two libraries, All Photos & Videos and My TouchPad, each containing several albums. The All Photos & Videos library contains all albums on your device, including those downloaded from online accounts. The My TouchPad library contains only albums containing pictures and videos that are stored on your device. The following table tells you where to find your pictures and videos both in the Photos & Videos app and in your device’s USB Drive storage.

You can use any picture that is stored on your device as wallpaper (see Set Wallpaper ). The picture does not have to be in the Wallpapers album.
You can assign any pictures or videos on your device to one of these albums or to an album you create.
Tip Besides using USB Drive mode to copy your photos, videos, and DRM-free music from your computer to your device, you can also use solutions available from third-party software developers (sold separately) that facilitate the transfer of media files to your device. For more information, open the browser on your computer and go to hpwebos.com/sync-solutions .
Create an album
- Open Photos & Videos
.
- Tap New Album.
- Enter the album name and tap Create Album.
New albums that you create are added to the All Photos & Videos and My TouchPad libraries.
Copy pictures or videos to an album
- Open Photos & Videos
.
- Tap the album containing the pictures or videos.

Do one of the following:
- To copy more than one picture or video: Tap
and tap Select All to select all pictures or videos in an album. To remove a file from the selection, tap it.
- To copy a single picture or video: Tap the thumbnail of the picture or video.
- Tap
. Tap the screen if is not visible.

Do either of the following:
- To create a new album: Tap Create New Album, enter the album name, and tap Create Album.
- To select an existing album: Tap an album.
Look at pictures in a slideshow
You can view the pictures in any album as a slideshow.
- Open Photos & Videos
.
- Tap the album you want to view as a slideshow.

Do one of the following:
- To start with the first picture in the album: Tap
.
- To select a different starting point: Tap the picture you want the slideshow to start at and tap
.
- To exit the slideshow, tap a picture.
Print pictures
Before you begin Your device supports printing on all network-capable HP printers that support PCL page description language in the local LAN. These printers include new HP ePrint-capable printers–Photosmart, Officejet, and LaserJet–as well as legacy printers approximately five years old or newer. Make sure your printer is turned on and that both your device and the printer are connected to your local or corporate wireless network. For personal printers, see the instructions that came with your printer for information about setting up a printer on a wireless network.

- Open Photos & Videos

- Tap the album containing the pictures.

Do either of the following:
- To print a single picture: Tap the thumbnail of the picture.
- To print more than one picture: Tap
and tap Select All to select all pictures in an album. To remove a file from the selection, tap it.
- Tap
. Tap the screen if is not visible.
Printers that are available on your current wireless network are displayed.
-
Do one of the following:
- If this is your first time using a printer on this network: If a list of printers is displayed, tap one.
- If you have already used a printer on this network: The last printer you used is remembered and is selected. If you want to select another printer, scroll down and tap Select Another Printer.
- To set up a printer manually or on a corporate network: Scroll down in the list of printers and tap Add a Printer. Tap Enter an IP address and enter the IP address of the printer. (Optional) Tap Name this printer and enter a name to identify the printer. Tap Done.
- (Optional) Depending on the printer you are using, you can set the following printer attributes:
Number of Copies: Tap 1 and tap the number of copies you want to print.
Size: Tap the current size and tap to select another size. The sizes displayed are those that are available on your printer.
Color Printing: Tap On to switch color printing from On to Off.
- Tap Print.
To cancel a print job, tap Cancel while the file is preparing to print, or while printing is in progress, tap at the top of the page, tap the notification, and then tap to the right of the print job in the Print Queue.
Add a comment to a picture or video in an online account
You can add comments to pictures that were downloaded from an online account, and you can view comments that have been made by others about those pictures.
- Open Photos & Videos

- Tap the album containing the picture or video, and tap a picture or video thumbnail.
- Tap
. Tap the screen if is not visible.
- Tap the comment box and enter a comment.
- Tap
to upload your comment. Tap to close the comment box.
Set up an online pictures or videos account on your device
To upload pictures to an account you have with a web service such as Facebook or Snapfish, you must set up the account on your device.
Did you know? If you set up a Facebook account in the Photos & Videos application and you leave “Use account with” Calendar and Contacts turned on when setting up the account, your Facebook contacts and calendar events appear in the Contacts and Calendar applications on your device also. Likewise, if you set up a Facebook account in Contacts, and you accept the default options while setting up that account, the account is already set up in Photos & Videos.
- Open Photos & Videos

- Open the application menu and tap Preferences & Accounts.
- Tap Add an Account, and tap the type of account you want to add. To set up an account type that is not listed, tap Find more to find an app and follow the instructions onscreen.
- Enter your account username and password and tap Sign In.
- Depending on the account, you may be presented with options for which apps should download data from that account. For each app, tap On or Off, and then tap Create Account.
Delete an online pictures or videos account
- Open Photos & Videos
.
- Open the application menu and tap Preferences & Accounts.
- Tap the account name.
- Tap Remove Account and tap Remove Account again to confirm.
Delete pictures or videos
You can delete pictures and videos that are stored on your device. These are displayed in the My TouchPad library. Pictures and videos that were downloaded from an online account cannot be deleted from your device. To delete these, you must log in to the online account and delete them from there.
- Open Photos & Videos

- Tap the album containing the pictures or videos.

and do one of the following:
- To delete more than one file: Tap Select All to select all pictures or videos in an album. To remove files that you do not want to delete from the selection, tap the file thumbnails.
- To delete a single file: Tap a thumbnail.

Look at pictures
To get pictures on your device, you can do any of the following:
You can view a picture as an email attachment in JPG, GIF,
BMP, or PNG format. You can view a picture as part of a multimedia
message in JPG format. In the Photos application, you can view pictures
you take with the camera or copy from your computer in JPG format.
You can also look at pictures on the web directly in the web
browser (see Viewing web content ).

Open Photos
.

Tap the album containing the picture, and tap the thumbnail
of the picture. The Photo roll album contains pictures you have
taken with your device’s camera.
-
Swipe left or right on the screen to look at other pictures
in the album.
Did you know? You can use the screen capture feature to crop or rotate
a picture. To crop a picture, zoom in to display the part of the
picture you want to keep, and then press Option + Sym + P.
To rotate a picture, turn your device in 90 degree increments to
rotate the picture, and then press Option + Sym + P.
You can find your cropped or rotated pictures in the Screen
captures album.
Organize your
pictures into albums
The Photos application contains the following default albums:
-
Photo roll: Contains all pictures you
take with your device’s camera. On the USB drive, they are stored
in DCM > 100PALM.
-
Wallpapers: Contains default pictures that you
can use as your wallpaper. On the USB drive, they are stored in
wallpapers folder.
Did you know? If you use one of your own pictures as wallpaper
(see Save a picture
as wallpaper), that picture
is not saved to the Wallpapers album.
The Photos application creates additional albums automatically
as you add the following types of pictures to your device:
-
Downloads: Contains any pictures in JPG,
GIF, BMP, or PNG format that you save from an email attachment.
-
Miscellaneous: Contains any pictures you copy
from your computer to the root level of the USB drive that you do
not assign to an album, as described in the procedure in this section.
-
Screen captures: Contains any screenshots that
you take. On the USB drive, they are stored in the Screen captures
folder.
-
[Folder created by you on the USB drive]: Contains
any pictures that you copied from elsewhere.
You can assign any pictures on your device to one of these
albums or to an album you create. To create and assign pictures
to albums, you must put your device into USB drive mode. You then
create the albums and move pictures into them using your computer.
-
Connect your device and your computer using the USB
cable.
-
On your device, tap USB Drive. If prompted, tap OK.
On your computer, your device appears as a removable drive.
Note On a Windows computer, if the Found New Hardware wizard opens,
click Cancel to close the wizard.
-
Open My Computer (Windows XP), Computer (Windows
Vista), or the Finder (Mac), and double-click
the drive representing your device.
-
To create an album, use your computer’s controls for creating
a new folder. To ensure that the Photos application can find the
album, create it at the root level of h drive representing your device, not
as a subfolder of another folder.
Note The Photos application displays an album you create only if
the album contains at least one picture in JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG
format.

Assign pictures to albums using your computer’s controls to
copy or move items. It is easiest to find the pictures you want
by displaying them as thumbnails.
-
On a Windows computer, to end the connection safely, right-click
the drive representing your device and click Eject.
On a Mac computer, drag the drive representing your device to the Trash.
Trash changes to Eject.
-
Disconnect the USB cable from the computer when
it is safe to do so.
Did you know? To delete an album, connect your device to your
computer and tap USB Drive. From your computer, open
the drive representing your device and delete the album.
Play pictures as a slideshow
-
Open Photos
.
-
Tap the album containing the pictures you want to see.
-
To start at the first photo, open the application menu and
tap Play Slideshow. To start at a particular photo,
tap the photo, and then tap
.
-
To exit the slideshow, tap a photo.
Copy a picture from a web page
Pictures you copy from the web are stored in the Miscellaneous album
in Photos.

Press and hold Option
and tap the picture.
-
Tap Copy to Photos.
-
Tap OK.
Add a picture
to a contact
You can add a picture to a contact using the Photos application.
Note You can also add a picture to a contact in Contacts (see Using Contacts ).

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.
-
If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.
-
Tap
and
tap Assign to contact.
-
Enter the contact name and tap the contact.
-
(Optional) Do either or both of the following:
-
To capture the portion of the picture you want for
the contact photo, tap and hold the picture, and then drag the portion
you want to the center of the onscreen box. This portion becomes
the contact photo.

To zoom out or in on a part of the picture: Pinch in or out
on the picture.
-
Tap Assign to Contact.
Save a picture
as wallpaper
Your wallpaper appears as the background in Card view.

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.
-
If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.
-
Tap
and
tap Set wallpaper.

Do either or both of the following:

To capture the portion of the picture you want to use
as wallpaper, tap and hold the picture, and then drag the portion
you want to the center of the onscreen box. This portion becomes
the wallpaper.

To zoom out or in on a part of the picture, pinch in or out
on the picture.

Tap Set Wallpaper.
Share a picture
You can send a picture to other picture-enabled devices or
to an email address as an attachment.

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.
-
If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.

Tap
and
tap Share via email or Share via
MMS.

Create the email or multimedia message.
Upload a picture
to the web
To upload a picture to a web service such as Facebook or Photobucket,
you must already have an account with the service, and you must
have the account set up on your device. You can set up the account
on your device during the upload process, as described in this procedure,
or you can set it up at any other time (see Set up an online pictures account
on your device).

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.

If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.
-
If

not visible, tap the screen to display it.

Tap
and
tap Upload.

Do one of the following:

If your picture web service is already set up on your device, tap
the name of the service you want to use.

If your picture web service is not yet set up on your device, tap Add
An Account and tap the account type. Enter your username
and password and tap Sign In. After sign
in, return to the picture in full-screen view and repeat steps 2
and 3.

To get videos on your phone, you can do any of the following:

Use the YouTube application to view YouTube videos (see Playing media ).

Playback controls automatically appear when you start a video.
They disappear after a few seconds. Tap the video to manually display

Edit videos you recorded
You can shorten videos you recorded, and you can select the
part of the video you want to save in the shortened version.

Open Videos

Tap Video roll, and tap the video date or title.

To rename the video, tap the video date or name and enter
a new name.

To add a description, tap Description and enter
the description.

Tap

Turn your device to landscape view.
-
The sequence of frames that make up the video is displayed
at the bottom of the screen. To shorten the video, tap, hold, and
drag either end of the video frame display.

To save a portion of the shortened video, tap and hold the
frame selector, and drag it to the left or right to select the video
segment you want to save.
-
Tap

The edited copy of the video is saved in Video roll along
with the original.
Set up an online videos account
on your device
To upload videos to an account you have with a web service
such as Facebook or YouTube, you must set up the account on your
device.

Open Videos

Open the application menu and tap Preferences
& Accounts.

Tap Add An Account, and tap the type
of account you want to add.
-
Enter your account username and password and tap Sign
In.
-
If prompted, tap On or Off to select
the apps you want to use with this account.

Upload or share videos you recorded
Note the following about sending or uploading a video:
-
If you create a long video and then edit it to shorten
it, the editing processing must be complete before you email, upload,
or send the video with a multimedia message. If the process was
not complete, the process fails or is incomplete.
-
Video files can be large, for example, a 1-minute video can
be more than 10MB. Many email providers have limits on how large
a file you can send via email. For example, videos may be limited
to 3 minutes, or files to 1–2GB. Check with your email provider for
the limits that apply.
-
Many online sites have limits on the size of files you can
upload. Facebook videos cannot exceed 2 minutes or 100 MB for unverified
accounts and 20 minutes or 1GB for verified accounts. YouTube videos
cannot exceed 10 minutes or 2GB.
-
Some wireless service providers limit the size of videos you
can send via MMS. For example, the Sprint limit is 2MB and the Verizon
limit is 1.2MB. Check with your wireless service provider regarding
file size limitations.
To upload a picture to a web service such as Facebook or Photobucket,
you must already have an account with the service, and you must
have the account set up on your device. You can set up the account
on your device during the upload process, as described in this procedure,
or you can set it up at any other time (see Set up an online pictures account
on your device).

To upload a video to a web service such as Facebook or YouTube,
you must already have an account with the service, and you must
have the account set up on your device. You can set up the account
on your device during the upload process, as described in this procedure,
or you can set it up at any other time (see Set up an online videos account
on your device).

Open Videos

Tap Video roll, and tap the video date or title.
-
Tap
and tap any of
the following:

Upload: If your video web service
is not yet set up on your device, tap Add An Account and
tap the account type. Enter your username and password and tap Sign
In. Enter an account name, tap On/Off to select
other applications you want to synchronize this account with, and
then tap Done. After you sign in, return and repeat
steps 2 and 3.

Upload to [online account]: To rename
the video, tap the video date or name and enter a new name. To add
a description, tap Description and enter the description.
Tap Upload Video. The up-arrow icon indicates that
the upload is in progress, and the check icon displays when the
upload has finished.
-
Share via email or Trim &
share via email: If a video is above the maximum size allowed
for sending by email, you can trim the video to an appropriate size
(see Edit videos you recorded).

Share via MMS or Trim & share
via MMS: If a video is above the maximum size allowed for
sending by MMS, you can trim the video to an appropriate size (see Edit videos you recorded).

To share a link to a video you uploaded to Facebook: Tap
,
and then tap Share Facebook Link. Tap Email or Messaging.
Delete a video
-
Open Videos

-
Tap the album containing the video.
-
Throw the video off either side of the screen, and tap Delete.

Upload a picture
to the web
To upload a picture to a web service such as Facebook or Photobucket,
you must already have an account with the service, and you must
have the account set up on your phone. You can set up the account
on your phone during the upload process, as described in this procedure,
or you can set it up at any other time (see Set up an online pictures account
on your phone).

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.

If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.

Tap
and
tap Upload.

Do one of the following:

If your picture web service is already set up on your
phone, tap the name of the service you want to use.

If your picture web service is not yet set up on your phone, tap Add
An Account and tap the account type. Enter your username
and password and tap Sign In. After sign
in, return to the picture in full-screen view and repeat steps 2
and 3.
Set up an online pictures account
on your phone
To upload pictures to an account you have with a web service
such as Facebook or Photobucket, you must set up the account on
your phone.
Did you know? If you set up a Facebook account in the Photos
application, your Facebook contacts and calendar events appear in
the Contacts and Calendar applications on your phone also. Likewise,
if you set up a Facebook account in Contacts or Calendar, the account
will allow you to upload pictures from Photos.

Open Photos

Open the application menu and tap Preferences
& Accounts.

Tap Add An Account, then tap the type
of account you want to add.

Enter your account username and password and tap Sign
In.
Delete a picture

Tap a picture thumbnail to view it full-screen.

If the photo header is hidden, tap the screen to display it.

Tap

Tap Delete to confirm.
Watch a video
To get videos on your phone, you can do any of the following:
You can view DRM-free videos that you receive as email attachments
or that you copy from your computer in the MPEG-4, H.263, H.264,
MP4, M4V, 3GP, 3GPP, 3G2, and 3GP2 formats. You can view videos
you open in a multimedia message in MP4 format. Videos play on your phone in
landscape orientation.
Did you know? A DRM-free file is a file that is not protected
by Digital Rights Management. DRM-free video files can be copied
as many times as you like and can be played on your Pre phone.
Use the YouTube application to view YouTube videos (see Playing media ).
Before you begin Before you put videos on your phone,
make sure you have enough storage space on your phone to fit
the file. Open Device Info and look at the Available field
under Phone.

Open Videos

Tap the album containing the video, and tap the video you
want to watch.
Use video playback controls
Playback controls automatically appear when you start a video.
They disappear after a few seconds. Tap the video to manually display
or dismiss the controls.

Use the volume buttons on the side
of your phone to control the sound level.
Did you know? To skip ahead 30 seconds in a video, flick left
to right on the screen. To jump back 10 seconds, flick right to
left.
Edit videos you recorded
You can shorten videos you recorded, and you can select the
part of the video you want to save in the shortened version.

Open Videos

Tap Video roll, and tap the video date
or title.

To rename the video, tap the video date or name and enter
a new name.

To add a description, tap Description and
enter the description.

Turn your phone to landscape view.

The sequence of frames that make up the video is displayed
at the bottom of the screen. To shorten the video, tap, hold, and
drag either end of the video frame display.

To save a portion of the shortened video, tap and hold the
frame selector, and drag it to the left or right to select the video
segment you want to save.

The edited copy of the video is saved in Video roll along
with the original.
Upload or share videos you recorded
Note the following about sending or uploading a video:

If you create a long video and then edit it to shorten
it, the editing processing must be complete before you email, upload,
or send the video with a multimedia message. If the process was
not complete, the process fails or is incomplete.

Video files can be large, for example, a 1-minute video can
be more than 10MB. Many email providers have limits on how large
a file you can send via email. For example, videos may be limited
to 3 minutes, or files to 1–2GB. Check with your email provider for
the limits that apply.

Online sites like Facebook have limits on the size of files
you can upload.
Before you begin To upload a video to Facebook, you download
the Facebook app from App Catalog and sign in to your Facebook account.

Open Videos

Tap Video roll, and tap the video date
or title.

Tap

Tap any of the following:
Upload to YouTube
Upload to Facebook
Share via email
Share via MMS
Delete a video

Open Videos
.
-
Tap the album containing the video.
-
Throw the video off either side of the screen, and tap Delete.
