HotSync PmTraceDatabase Protocol Error Handheld file could not be opened (4004)

This article applies to devices synchronizing with Palm Desktop by Access 6.2 for Windows.

When synchronizing with Palm Desktop 6.2, users may experience an error dialogue after a successful synchronization stating that the "HotSync operation completed with errors".

  1. Click on the error dialogue to bring up the HotSync log.
  2. Expand the HotSync operation for the date in question by clicking the [+]
  3. Click the blue link to access your devices backup folder information
  4. Click the [+] to expand the Failed to backup… field

If the file PmTraceDatabase is visible under Failed to backup…, this is expected behavior. This database does not hold any device or PIM information.

This error may occur on subsequent synchronizations. It is acceptable to ignore this error, as it has no effect on the backed up data.

Utility for corrrecting this problem: FixPMTrace

Please install and run the utility called FixPmTrace to prevent the error message seen in the HotSync log.

Cause of the issue: PmTraceDatabase file has incorrect file attribute set

Method

  1. Install fixpmtrace.prc onto your Palm OS handheld or phone using the install tool.
  2. Locate FixPmTrace in the Palm Launcher and launch the application.
  3. Observe the Success! message. You can exit the FixPMTrace application and delete the application if you wish.
