6Ts: Six ways to get your webOS phone working again

Article ID: 66394

Is your device not working the way you expect it to? Has it stopped responding to taps? Is one of your applications not responding or behaving strangely?

These problems can be pretty easy to fix.

Here are six different troubleshooting methods - 6Ts - that you can try, on your own, to get your device working again.

Try each method in the order it?s presented to see if it solves your problem. When the problem is solved, Stop.

How to get back here

Are you viewing this on the webOS device that's having the problem? Some of these steps will close the 6Ts Troubleshooter you're viewing now. To return here:

  1. Open Web .
  2. Enter this address: palm.com/6.

Step 1: Throw all open applications off the top of the screen

  1. If you?re working in an application that?s displayed full-screen and it isn?t responding, flick up from the gesture area to send the app to Card view.
  2. Throw the app off the top of the screen to close it.
  3. Throw any other open applications off the top of the screen to close them.

Why this might help

One or more of your open applications could be reserving so much memory that there?s not enough memory left to do real work. Closing apps can free up enough memory so you can continue working.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 2: Turn your device completely off and on

  1. Press and hold Power .
  2. Tap Power, and then tap Restart.

Tip An occasional restart can be good for your device, just the way a restart can be good for your computer. Every once in a while, restart your device.

Why this might help

Restarting your device closes all applications, frees up all memory, and reinitializes all your wireless services (phone, Bluetooth® technology, and Wi-Fi). It?s a fresh start.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 3: Triple-toggle restart

  1. Press and hold the power button
  2. While still holding down power, slide the ringer switch three times. Wait a few seconds for the restart to begin.

Or try this method for restarting your device: 3-key restart

Press and hold these keys Option + Symbol + R and then release them all at once.

Give this method at least ten seconds for the restart to begin.

Why this might help

A triple-toggle or 3-key restart may be effective if the screen is off and can?t be turned on, or if gestures don?t work. These restarts also close all applications, free memory, and reinitialize wireless services (phone, Bluetooth® technology, and Wi-Fi on devices that support Wi-Fi).

Tip Because open applications are forced to close immediately during this kind of restart, some unsaved data may be lost.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 4: Top off the battery

  1. Connect your USB cable to the AC charger and to your device.
  2. Plug the AC charger into a working electric outlet.
  3. Let the battery recharge completely.

Details on charging the battery: Pre, Pixi - Veer.

Why this might help

Fully charging the battery ensures your device is not conserving power due to a low battery.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 5: Take out the battery

Note If your device has a non-removable battery, skip this step.

Important Don?t try this method until you?ve already tried the four Ts before this. Because open applications are forced to close immediately, some unsaved data may be lost.

  1. Try shutting down the phone: Press and hold the power button. Tap Power > Shut Down/Swap Battery > Shut Down.
  2. Take out the battery, wait about 5 seconds, and then reinsert it. This causes your device to restart.

Why this might help

Reinserting the battery performs a restart and also triggers an automatic clean-up of files that weren?t closed properly.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 6: Tether your device to your computer and reinstall webOS

Note Don?t try this method until you?ve already tried the five Ts before this.

Important A desktop or laptop computer is required to complete this step. On the computer, go to palm.com/6 and click through to Step 6 to see the content below.

    1. On a Windows or Mac computer, go to palm.com/rom.
    2. Follow the steps to put your device into USB update mode and run webOS Doctor.
    3. When the update is complete, restore your backed up data and sync relationships. See How to restore data after an update.

Why this might help

Installing the latest version of the webOS platform wipes and refreshes all memory. Your preferences and installed software are not affected.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.
