What is this software?

This software update is a minor tune-up that may improve device usability in certain situations.

Do you need this update?

On your Centro smartphone, press Phone . Then press Menu . From the Options menu, select Phone Info

Look for the Software item. If the version number is lower than 1.03 and the end of the string says VZW, you can install this update.

 

System Requirements

  • Install this software on a Centro for Verizon only. The update will not work on any other smartphone.
  • Allow an hour for this update, preferably at a time when you won’t be interrupted by phone calls or text messages.
  • Be prepared to back up your data before the update and restore it after.
  • Plug your smartphone into its AC charger and keep it plugged in throughout the update.
  • Keep an eye on your smartphone during the update. Respond to prompts and alerts in a timely manner.
  • Important: Settings for some applications such as IM are not retained after update process. You will need to re-enter your user data. If you use Email (VersaMail) remember to re-enter your email account password(s). You will need to re-pair any Bluetooth devices.
  • Windows compatibility: This update is for Windows Vista and Windows XP users only.
  • Palm Desktop required: If you have not already done so, you must install the latest version of Palm Desktop software from the Palm Software Installation CD that came with your Centro smartphone. If you do not have Palm Desktop software on your computer, you must install this update through an expansion card (here's how).
  • Monitor your computer: During the update, respond to prompts and alerts when they appear.
  • Watch your Centro: If your Centro screen goes black during the update process, wake it up by gently pressing Power/End . Do not unplug it.
  • Incoming call or SMS: If you receive a phone call or text message during the update, ignore it. Responding to messages or calls will disrupt the update and you will need to start over.

How To Install

Before you begin:

  • Remove the stylus from the phone. You will need it later in the update process.
  • Connect the USB sync cable to your smartphone.
  • Sync your smartphone with your computer (or use your preferred backup method). This important step will back up your device to your computer.

During the update process your device will be hard reset. You must restore your data to your device after the update process completes, using a HotSync operation.

Double-click the file you downloaded: Centro_1_03_VZW_desktopupdater.exe

Follow the instructions on your computer and Centro. Your smartphone will reset itself three times. Be sure to follow all on-device prompts as soon as they appear.

  • Do not disconnect the sync cable or the charger during the update. Doing so may cause the update to fail.
  • Remember: If your screen goes black during the update process, your device has fallen asleep. Wake it up by gently pressing Power/End . Do not unplug it.

The update takes approximately 15 minutes.

Make sure the charger is still plugged into your Centro and then wait for the Palm logo to appear after the final reset.

A message will appear on your computer when the update is complete.

Click "Finished" to close the update screen.

Important: Before you are able to use your device, you must reactivate your phone by dialing *228 and then select option 2.

Synchronize your smartphone with your computer (or use your preferred restore method) to restore the data you backed up at the beginning.

Verify that your Centro was updated

  1. On your Centro, press Phone
  2. Press Menu .
  3. From the Options menu, select Phone Info
  4. Check your Software version. If it says Centro-1.03-VZW, the update was successful.
