Making and receiving calls
You can make and receive calls in
a number of ways with your HP webOS device. You can also view information
about your calls.
Dial using the
onscreen dial pad
The onscreen dial pad is useful when you need to dial numbers
that are expressed as letters and when you need large, brightly
lit numbers that you can tap.

Open Phone
.

Tap the onscreen keys to enter the number.
Tip Tap the onscreen backspace icon to delete numbers you’ve
entered.
Tip You can paste numbers copied from other applications—for example,
from an email message or a memo—into the dial pad.

to
dial.
Dial using the keyboard

From the Launcher or Card view, use the keyboard to
enter the number. You do not need to press the Option
key to enter numbers,
*, or #.

To dial, tap the number when it appears.
Tip You can also enter a number with the keyboard when
the dial pad is displayed. After entering the number, tap the onscreen
dial icon to dial.
Create a speed
dial
You can assign a speed dial to any contact phone number. You
can assign up to 26 speed dials. You cannot assign 1 (the E key)
as a speed dial. The number 1 is reserved for dialing your voicemail
system.

Open Contacts

Search for a contact, and tap the contact name.

Open the application menu, and tap Set
speed dial.

Tap the phone number you want to assign a speed dial to, and
then tap the key to use as a speed dial. (You may have to scroll
to find the key you want.)

To assign a currently used speed dial key to a new
number, follow the steps for setting a new speed dial for the new
number. Tap the key to use, and tap Reassign To Undefined.

To remove a speed dial from a number, open the contact, open
the application menu, and tap Set Speed Dial.
Tap the number, and tap Remove Speed Dial [key letter].
Tip To insert a two-second pause in the dialing sequence,
enter a T where you want the pause to appear. To add
a + symbol in the dialing sequence for international dialing, press
and hold 0 (zero) in the location where you want the
+ symbol to appear. To insert a stop in the dialing sequence, enter
a P where you want the stop to appear; to dial the
next set of numbers after the stop, tap the screen.
Note Local number formatting is currently not supported outside
of the United States and Canada.
Dial using a
speed dial
In Launcher, Card view, or Phone, press and hold the speed-dial
key you assigned to the number.
Dial by contact name
You can look up and dial contacts using universal search.

Open Phone
.

Tap
to open Contact
Search. Enter a name or initials until the contact you want appears.
Tip You can set a preference that lets you perform a contact
search right from the dial pad, without having to open Contact Search.

Did you know? If you press E, R, or any other key that displays both
a letter and a number, you see both matching names and numbers onscreen.
Did you know? If your company uses Microsoft Exchange Server with
a Global Address List (GAL), entering the contact search information
returns matching results from the GAL as well.

Tap the number.
Redial the last number dialed

Open Phone
.

Tap
.
When the number appears at the top of the screen, tap
again to dial.
Tip You can also open Voice Dial and then
say Redial.
Dial by contact name using voice
dialing
Voice dialing works with contact entries in the Contacts application
that came with your phone.

To open Voice Dial, do one of the following:
-
Open Voice Dial
.
-
Press and hold volume.
-
Open Phone
and
tap and hold
.
-
If you have a headset connected to your phone, press
and hold the button on the headset. This works for both wired headsets
and headsets that use Bluetooth wireless
technology.
Note The first time you open Voice Dial, a brief audio tutorial
plays explaining how to use the feature.

Say one of the following:
-
The contact’s name
-
The contact’s number
-
The contact’s name and number type (for example, say, “John
Smith mobile”).
Tip You can use voice dialing to call any contact number type
except the following: fax, pager, assistant, and radio.

If prompted, provide additional information for the number
you want to call.
For example, if you say a contact name only, and you have
multiple phone numbers for that contact, Voice Dial prompts you
to say the type of number you want to call. Or, if you say a contact
name that matches more than one contact in your contacts list, Voice
Dial prompts you to specify which contact you want.
Additional Voice Dial commands: You can say any
of the following voice commands when Voice Dial is open:

Tip You can also exit Voice Dial by tapping Cancel,
pressing and holding volume, throwing the card off
the top of the screen, or pressing the button on an attached headset.
Did you know? You can turn on a preference that allows you to use
voice dialing when the screen is locked (see Using Screen & Lock ).
Dial your national emergency number
You can dial a national emergency number such as 911, 112,
or 999 anytime. Just press power
to wake up the
screen, and enter the emergency number. You don't have to press
the Option
key
to enter numbers.
If your device is in airplane mode, you don't have to turn airplane
mode off to dial a national emergency number.
If you lock your device and select a PIN, dial the emergency
number by entering the number in the password field and tapping
.
If you select a password, however, you must press the Option
key twice before entering
the number in the password field.
Dial from a web page or message
Your device recognizes most phone numbers that appear in web
pages, messages, email, text, or multimedia.

If a phone number appears as an underlined link, tap
the number. This displays the dial pad with the number already entered.

Tap
to
dial.
Make a second
call

While on a call, tap
.

Dial the second call.
Answer a call
Do one of the following:
-
If the screen is on when the phone starts ringing,
tap
.
-
If the screen is off, drag
up to unlock the
screen and answer the call.

If a headset is attached, press the headset button.
Did you know? If you are playing music or a video on your device
and a call arrives, playback pauses automatically and resumes when
you hang up or ignore the call.
Answer a second
call (call waiting)
When a second call notification appears, tap
.
The first call is put on hold.

Ignore a call
To send a call immediately to voicemail, do one of the following:

Tap
.

Press power
twice.
To reply to a caller who is in your Contacts list after you
ignore a call, tap the ignored call notification. This opens the
caller’s contact entry, where you can select a reply method.
Adjust call volume
-
When you’re on a call, press the volume button to
adjust the call volume.
Silence the ringer
on an incoming call
Do one of the following:
-
Tap
.
-
Press volume down.
-
Slide the ringer switch off (red means off).
This silences the ringer and any notification sounds. These sounds
remain off until you slide the ringer switch back on. Other sounds,
such as music and video playback, are not affected by sliding the
ringer switch off.
Make a conference
call
When you’re on a call, you can join up to 5 calls into a 6-way
conference call, provided the service is available from your wireless
service provider. The number of calls you can join varies based
on your wireless service provider’s network. Additional charges
may apply, and minutes in your mobile account may be deducted for
each call you place. Contact your wireless service provider for
more information.

Make or answer a first call, and then make or answer
a second call.
-
Tap
to create the conference
call.
-
Do any of the following if your wireless service provider
plan allows for additional calls:
-
To add additional callers, tap
.To
extract a call from the conference and talk privately, tap the caller
name or number, and then tap
.To return an extracted
call to the conference, tap
.

When you’re done, do one of the following:
-
Tap
to end all calls.
-
Ask one of the callers to hang up, so you can stay connected
to the other caller.
Swap between
two calls
Note On some phone networks, you can swap between calls only if
the second call is incoming. Check with your wireless service provider
for details.
Do one of the following:
-
Tap
to put the active
call on hold, and switch to the other caller.
-
Tap Hold to make the on-hold call the active
call.
End a call
Do one of the following:
-
Tap
.
-
If a headset is attached, press the headset button.
View call information
-
Open Phone
.
-
Tap
.
-
Do any of the following:
-
To switch the types of calls displayed, tap All
Calls or Missed Calls.
-
To call a number, tap the number.
-
To save the number to Contacts, tap
to the right of
the number.
-
To view a contact entry, tap
to the right of
the number.
-
To delete a call history entry, throw the entry off the side
of the screen.
Did you know? In the call log, outgoing calls are designated
by a right-pointing green arrow, and incoming calls are designated
by a left-pointing blue arrow. Missed calls are designated by a
bent red arrow.
Tip To clear the call log, open the application menu,
and tap Clear call history.
