5Ts: Five ways to get your webOS tablet working again

Article ID: 17222

Is your HP webOS tablet not working the way you expect it to? Has it stopped responding to taps? Is one of your applications not responding or behaving in an unexpected way?

These problems can be pretty easy to fix.

Here are five different troubleshooting methods - 5Ts - that you can try, on your own, to get your tablet working again.

Try each method in the order it's presented to see if it solves your problem. When the problem is solved, Stop.

How to get back here

Are you viewing this on the webOS tablet that's having the problem? Some of these steps will close the 5Ts Troubleshooter you're viewing now. To return here:

  1. Open Web .
  2. Enter this address: hpwebos.com/5ts.

Step 1: Throw all open applications off the top of the screen

  1. If you're working in an application that's displayed full-screen and it isn't responding, press Center to send the app to Card view
  2. Throw the app off the top of the screen to close it.
  3. Throw any other open applications off the top of the screen to close them.

Why this might help

One or more of your open applications could be reserving so much memory that there's not enough memory left to do real work. Closing apps can free up enough memory so you can continue working.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 2: Turn your tablet completely off and on

  1. Press and hold Power.
  2. Tap Shut Down.
  3. To turn your tablet back on, press and hold Power until the HP logo appears.

Why this might help

Restarting your tablet closes all applications, frees up all memory, and reinitializes all your wireless services (phone, Bluetooth® technology, and Wi-Fi). A fresh start.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 3: Trigger a restart

  1. Press and hold Power.
  2. While still holding down Power, press and hold Center until the HP logo appears (about 15 seconds_.

Why this might help

A restart may be effective if the screen is off and you can't turn it on, or if the screen is on but doesn't respond to taps or other gestures.

Tip An occasional restart can be good for your tablet just the way a restart can be good for your computer. Every once in a while, restart your tablet..

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 4: Top off the battery

  1. Connect your USB cable to the AC charger and to your tablet.
  2. Plug the AC charger into a working electric outlet.
  3. Let the battery recharge completely.

Note If you use an HP Touchstone, be sure to complete this step using the USB cable and the AC charger, not the Touchstone. Connecting directly to a working outlet is more effective in waking a device.

Why this might help

Fully charging the battery ensures your tablet is not conserving power due to a low battery.

Did that solve the problem?

Yes: Stop. No: Continue.

Step 5: Tether your tablet to your computer and reinstall webOS

Note Don't try this method until you've already tried the four Ts before this.

  1. On a Windows or Mac computer, go to hpwebos.com/account and sign in.
  2. Find your device in the list and click Device Options. Then click Get webOS Doctor.
  3. There, you'll learn how to put your tablet into USB update mode and run webOS Doctor.

Why this might help

Installing the latest version of webOS wipes and refreshes all memory. Your preferences, installed software, and files in USB drive storate are not affected.
