SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. A SIM card is a small "smartcard" that houses your mobile phone number, authenticiation key, and other information. The SIM card resides inside GSM phones, but it can be removed easily and swapped to another phone.
You can store some Speed Dial numbers and SMS messages directly on your SIM so that you are never without them, even if you're using somebody else's phone. When you use your SIM in another phone, you are accessing the network through your own identity and authentication, so all activity will be credited to your account. VisorPhone and GSM versions of Treo use SIM cards.

To remove the SIM
Follow the steps above to access the SIM area, and remove the card from its slot.
You don't have to do any special preparations before you remove the SIM. You might want to turn off Wireless mode of your phone to avoid a beep and an alert message, but you will not harm the SIM or the phone unless you are writing to the SIM when you remove it.
